"Paddle a thing of beauty."

That's the motto of Paul Burns, the owner of the Lone Pine Canoe Company. He operates a small shop in Muskoka that specializes in repairs and restorations to cedar-canvas and cedar-strip canoes using traditional methods and materials.

Over the years, Paul has worked on and researched many popular canoe models such as Chestnut, Langford, Morris, Old Town, Peterborough, Tremblay and others. He takes a personal interest in each project that enters his shop and he loves delving into the history and 'the story' behind the watercraft that he's working on.

Paul’s love for boatbuilding started at the age of 14 when he built his first wood-frame / canvas Kayak as part of a club in school. Inspired by his teachers, who had built their own cedar strip canoes, he finished building his own 17' Redbird by the time he graduated from high school in 1987.
In 1988 he moved to Muskoka where he started working at Muskoka Fine Watercraft. He went on to spend 12 years learning the trade from experienced canoe builders. Thereafter he continued working part-time with canoe construction and restoration until 2013, when he was able to open his own workshop in Bracebridge, the Lone Pine Canoe Company.

In the shop, care is taken to closely follow the traditional canoe building methods. Most of the work in the shop is done by hand. Repairs are done in a way that preserves the style features and materials of the original model unless the client specifies otherwise. All finishes are applied using marine paints and varnishes by Epifanes and Interlux.
In addition to full canvas replacement and fibreglass refinishing, Lone Pine Canoe can look after smaller projects such as gunwale or deck replacements and hand-caned seat repairs. Repair service is also offered for cedar-strip kayaks and other small wooden watercraft.
